The Office for Climate Education will be releasing soon its first Teacher’s guide book for primary and secondary school on the topic of Climate Change!

Following the IPCC publication of the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate last September, the OCE is about to finish its first teacher’s guide book on the topic.

The climate in our hands - Ocean and Cryosphere will be the first volume of the collection “The climate in our hands”, a series of teacher’s guide books on the topic of climate change.

This first volume focuses on the ocean and cryosphere (ice and snow on Earth) in a changing climate. In this context, a wide variety of subjects are approached, from the origin of climate change, to its consequences on the ocean and cryosphere - such as cryosphere melting, sea level rise and ocean acidification - and how to mitigate or adapt to the coming challenges. Here below you can find the summary of all the lessons of the first part of this guide book, which is followed by a second part consisting on different class projects designed to address climate change adaptation, mitigation or awareness issues.

The guide book includes four main parts:

  • Scientific Overview

A teacher-friendly overview of the scientific background needed in order to master the topics that will be discussed in the lessons.

A brief overview of the different approaches to learning that are proposed in the guidebook, as well as some hints on how to make the best out of this teaching resource.

  • Part 1 - We understand

This part of the guide book is the lesson plan. A series of lessons are proposed, following the natural path of reasoning of the students. These include different approaches to learning: inquiry-based, experimentation, role-playing games, debates, documentary analysis and group work. Some lessons are proposed to all, while others target only more advanced students.

The lesson plan focuses on developing scientific knowledge, but also environmental awareness and life skills, such as creative and critical thinking, decison-making and interpersonal skills. Hence, it is strongly multidisciplinary, covering different disciplines of the natural and social sciences, as well as arts and physical education.

  • Part 2 - We act

This second part of the class activities builds up on the knowledge and skills acquired in Part 1, and proposes a project-based learning approach. The class chooses, designs and implements an “action project”, targeting a goal of mitigation, adaptation or raising awareness to climate change. The students can thus become the actors of the change they want to see in their surrounding environment and community, and implement effective measures at their reach to better cope with climate change consequences on the ocean and cryosphere.
